Freeholders quarter. This land consisted of about 850 acres which was not owned by the Lords of the Manor but held in freehold by individuals. An indenture was signed and dated 4th of November 1664, between the Earl of Carlisle, Sir Thomas Horsley and five Freeholders. This deed for division of the in-grounds and commons, effectively ended the open field system and common pasturage of the village. The freeholders who signed the document were George Dobson, Thomas Dobson, Thomas Sopwith, William Woodman and George Bolton.
The Ogle family owned Causey Park. "James HUME son of Thomas HUME then resident at Causey Park died April 28th 1796." On 13 July 1815 a Robert GREY, of Causey Park aged 98, died there and a Robert Harbottle is of Causey Park on June 12th 1854.
A John Grey yeoman of Longhorsley south moor is recorded as having a will dated 24 Nov 1778. He died that year. “The above will was proved on or about 13 Jany 1779 by George Grey of Wingates Farmer, William Grey of Nesbit Farmer & James Grey of Longhorsley South Moor Farmer, the sons of the said deceased the Executors” His surviving children are listed as Edward, John, George, William and James. The John listed on the tax records below may be his son who later farmed Heton and bought Middle Ord in 1788.
There is a death record in 1785 for a James Grey of Wingates Moor. It isn't known if Longhorsley south moor is the same farm as Wingates Moor.

Land tax records for 1798 and 1799.
A record of the taxpayers at Longhorsley in 1798 and 1799 can be found on the ancestry.co.uk website where the original records from the National Archives at Kew can be seen. These records are 20 years after the date of John Grey of Longhorsley's death in 1778. They show comparatively few owners of land, including Lord Carlisle, William Trevelyan and Thomas Riddell and a large number of tenant farmers including a John Grey. No names of farms are given but some may be guessed at by looking at the monumental inscriptions at Longhorsley's old church yard. The names at the bottom of each list with owners including Dobson and Bolton are possibly in the freeholders quarter.
RIDDELLS QUARTER Riddell's quarter was originally Horsley quarter. The Horsley family owned lands since the 13th century. Richard of Horsley being recorded in the Lay Subsidy Roll of 1296. The quarter contained about 2300 acres and came into the possession of the Riddell family, through the maternal line, when Sir Thomas Horsley died without male heirs. The estates of Thomas Riddell are listed in "Northumbrian documents of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, comprising the register of the estates of Roman Catholics in Northumberland and the correspondence of Miles Stapylton", starting on page 110.

BIGGES QUARTER This land was originally known as Carlisle's Quarter. It had been in the possession of the family from the time of Henry the first until Charles William Bigge and Ralph Carr esquires bought the manor under an act of parliament from the estate of the late Earl of Carlisle in 1808.
Lord Carlisle owned Castle Howard. There are four Howard deeds which mention Greys: (DHN/N/12/6, 9, 22, 33) in the catalogue of Howard family papers relating to Northumberland dated 1698 and 1719. No.6: Edward Gray of Horsley, Co. Northumberland, yeoman No.9: Thomas Gray of Horsley, Co. Northumberland, yeoman No.22: Edward Grey of Longhorsley, Co. Northumberland, yeoman No.33: Edward Grey of Longhorsley, Co. Northumberland, yeoman.
