The writer records a visit to New Zealand in 1898 and a search of passenger lists reveals the Dixon-Johnson family. The writer is likely to be Charles William Dixon Johnson. Kennel Lameness Give 2 drops Nux Vomica in desert spoonful of water twice a day for two days then give 2 drops tincture Rhus Tox: in desert spoonful of water 3 times a day indefinitely. This is for a large dog. (G.G.) To Fatten a Lean Horse Two teaspoonfuls of Nitre, two of Sulphur and one of Antimony. To be well pounded up, mixed and divided into ten powders, one to be given with the morning meal, a second course to be repeated after a fortnight. (An Afghan recipe. “Field” Apl.10.04) Drag Mixture Onions 4 oz Fenngreak 4 oz powdered Aniseed 2 oz Camphor 1 dr Sulphur 1 oz Boil together and add two teaspoonfuls of honey.
The last two pages contain mixtures. These have been copied from originals, three of which are loose inside the book, some are in George Grey's handwriting.
Mange Lotion Flowers of Sulphur 2 lbs Unslaked Lime 1 lb Water 2 gallons. Slake the lime in the water stir in the sulphur and boil down to a gallon. Let stand till cold, pour off the clear stuff and make the quantity up to 5 quarts with cold water. Wet the dogs well with this every day for 3 days and then at longer intervals. It will turn them yellowish, but never mind that. Then get some Fowler’s solution of Arsenic. Give from 2 to 8 drops twice a day with load according to size of dog. Terriers will do with from 3 to 4 according to size. While they are getting it watch well if appetite fails or the eyes get red, if they do reduce the dose or stop it for a few days starting with half the dose again. Feed on a good deal of vegetable, not much meat. (G.G.)

(Dated Nov 23.08) For Charlie

For Colic in Horses Give 10 drops Caustic Ammonia in a wine glassfull of water every 15 or 20 minutes. Don’t give any more than this dose and this mixture of water or you will burn his mouth. If you are away from home or have no caustic ammonia give double quantity common ammonia but dilute with about 3 times quantity of water, but it is not so effective. A 4 oz bottle will last a long time. (G.G.)

Mange Lotion Train Oil 1 pint Turpentine ¼ pint Sulphur ¼ lb Creosote 6 bottle. Mix together and well rub all over dog. On third day dog must be washed with soft soap and a second dress with lotion again if thought advisable. If mange is very bad clip the hair off a long coated dog.

THE GLENDALE FOXHOUNDS. Twenty Miles Without a Check. IN Mr. Fenwick's diary a big page will be needed to chronicle the doings of his gallant little pack on Tuesday, the 6th day of February, 1906 ; and against that date in his calendar there no doubt appears a mark—a prominent mark—in red. A red-letter day it was, truly, and it will be remembered when their heads are grey by the half-dozen stout hearted horsemen whose privilege it was to be with the hounds throughout the run. It began at Ford, in the valley of the Till—the garden of Northumberland. It ended in cloudland, far up among the peat hags and morasses, and, amidst the hoar frosts and driving mists on the top of big Cheviot, twenty miles away, and 2,600 ft. above the sea. Many fine runs the Glendale have had, but few can equal, and fewer still, if any, can beat, that of which I write. When Mr. Fenwick formed his pack four years ago, and gave to it the territorial name, he laid upon it great responsibilities. He charged it with the duty of living up to a great reputation, for, in the Borderland, the memory of the " Glendale" of the eighties is fresh and clear. The pack has not been found wanting. It is doing its duty, and doing it well, and the record that I give here will help to bear me out. Mr. Fenwick, most unfortunately, was not able to hunt himself, owing to indisposition, and so perforce he handed the horn and the care of the hounds to his capable kennel-huntsman, Luke Gilhome. The meet was a smallish one, but it was game to the backbone. Mr. Ronald Barber and Mr. Fred Barber were there, and so were Mr. Logan and his son, Mr. Geoffrey Lambton and Mr. Richard Stawart, and Mr. Brown from Horton, and Mrs. Alder from New Etal. The Rectory Wood was blank, and Luke therefore went off to the Moss behind the Ford coal-pits, where, by the way Mr. Snowdon is making what looks like a successful attempt to get at the rich coal seams which underlie that part of the Marquis of Waterford's estate. Barely had the hounds been thrown in, when a fox started from the heather, in which he had evidently been " week-ending," and set out boldly on a south-easterly course, over the Ford Wood House Hill in the direction of Fenton. The hounds hit off the line at once, and fourteen couple—the full strength of the pack—streamed over the brow of the hill, and began a chase at 11.15 a.m. which was to continue without break or fault far on into the afternoon. The pace at first was moderate, as scent, though fair, was nothing to boast of, and the hounds had to hunt the line over the grass lands of Ford Wood and Routin Linn, throughout the Curraghmore Plantation and the Routin Linn strip into the long stretch of wood on Mr. Lambton's ground at Fenton, which runs from the Lowick road to Berwick Edge. Immediately the woodland was entered the pace quickened, and the hounds, "with eager jealousy," at once began to race on a burning scent. And they gave tongue as only hill hounds can. The music rang and echoed " as if a double hunt were heard at once." It rose and fell, it ebbed and flowed. Now it was a crash, and again it was a whisper, but it was never silent. And it swept on, as the hounds ran the wood, a full twelve furlongs in length. At the farther end 10 ½ couple of hounds were sticking closely to their fox. In the wood 3 ½ couple detached themselves from the main body and picked up another fox, but there was no time to wait for them, as the others were pressing forward in a straight line over the grass below Wrangham towards Doddington. They passed through the Doddington Dene and made for the Doddington Quarry. Here it was feared the hunt would end, for, in spite of the clang of machinery, and the thunder of falling rock, the debris heaps in the quarry are strongholds which foxes love, and they will break through a cordon of men to find refuge there. But our fox was thinking of the big hills whence he had come, and whither he was going, and he turned a blind eye to all allurements, and threaded his way through the intricacies of the piled-up rubble, and faced the open country beyond. He continued his course by the keeper's house near the sculptured rocks, and thence by the Westwood Dene into the Horton West cover. Here he did not dwell for a single moment, but broke at the south end, and, still keeping a straight course, dipped into the valley and crossed the Till on to Heathery Hall. The farmplace was in his way, and he made a slight detour to avoid it. He ran the haugh-lands up the Till, and, curving easily to the right, he circled the steading, crossed the Fowberry road, and, with Cheviot in his eye and mind, kept on the curve until he had crossed the Wooler and Chatton road, and then made a bee-line for the home which was still far away. Trickley Wood was near, and offered him safe harbour, but he would have none of it, even for temporary shelter. His course now led him by way of Coldmartin, and the old Wooler fair ground on Whitsun Bank on to the Wooler and Whittingham main road, which he crossed near Wooler Haugh Head. He was now entering the hill country, and familiar landmarks no doubt gave him a home-like feeling and cheered his stout old heart. He pressed on by way of Earle and Earle Hid Head to the glitters at Hartsheugh. He ran these for a short distance, and then sank into the valley and crossed over the hip of the Sneer Hill on to the Langlesford road. During the whole of this time hounds were keeping close up to him without check of any sort. After striking the Langlesford road the fox ran it for two miles, and on this stretch, curiously enough, the scent was hot, and hounds ran very fast. They entered the wood at Langlesford, but broke immediately at the west end and faced Hedgehope. The time was now 1.15 p.m., and two hours had elapsed since Ford Moss was left. Horses could go no farther because of the dangerous ground, and the field was reluctantly obliged to stop. The Messrs. Barber and Logan, Mr. Lambton, and Mr. Stawart were all up. Luke, however, had to follow on, and, leaving his horse, he tackled Hedgehope in top boots and spurs. In time he reached the top, after the usual one step forward and two backward. Hounds then were not to be seen, but a note now and again indicated their direction. A scramble out and in peat hags, where 3,000 yards or more go to the measured mile, brought hounds in view. They were pluckily following their fox yard by yard, and threading their way among the hags on the farther edge preparatory to leaving the hilltop for the valley between Hedgehope and Cheviot. They were quickly down in the stream, and for a short distance it looked as though the fox were leading them back to Langlesford, but 100 yards on that course saw them again out of the valley and climbing Cheviot. With care and precision they tracked the fox up and still up over ground frozen hard and slippery with heavy hoar frost. Ridge after ridge they topped, and to the scrambling and toiling huntsman they seemed to be going on for ever. They crested glitter upon glitter, and still the fox was forrard. At last they came to a standstill in rolling clouds of mist, and they could carry the line no further for lack of scent, and when Luke arrived at 3.40 p.m. he found ten couple of hounds awaiting him within 100 yards of the pole which marks the highest point of the hill. The horses at Langlesford were got at five o'clock, three and three-quarter hours after they had been discarded, and at 8.15 home was reached. The distance run, measured from the flat surface of a map, was twenty miles, but the switchback surfaces covered add many more, but just how many I am quite unable to say. WINDY GHILL.

HUNTING. DURHAM AND NORTHUMBERLAND HUNT HISTORY. T HE EXACT DATE at which Mr W. H. Lambton, Mr Ralph Larnbton's elder brother, and father to the first Lord Durham, started his pack of foxhounds is fixed by a letter written by him to Mr Robinson, a friend of his. The letter in question is dated from Berkeley-square, on April 3, 1793, and runs ; Having given up hunting in Leicestershire, I purpose keeping a small pack of foxhounds in Durham. I have reason to think that Lord Darlington and myself shall agree about the division of the country. As you are a good sportsman, pray let me know what can he done in your neighbourhood to promote our sport. From the banks of the river to the seaside we might surely improve the country by inclosing some patches of whin or making other coverts. I am sure you will have the goodness to keep a strict look out that no litters are destroyed during the ensuing breeding season. I will thank you for any hints, and shall be obliged if you will as assure persons that upon fair cases I will satisfy them for any loss they may sustain. This letter confirms what was said last week as to the Lambton Hounds being started in 1793, and shows that Nimrod's chronology was faulty, for he put the date at 1789, making the Lambton Hunt one year only junior to its neighbour the Raby. Mention has already been made of Mr Ralph Larnbton's prowess in the saddle, and no one who rode as hard as he did could pass through his hunting career without his share of falls. In Leicestershire he " took his tosses " as a matter of course, but, like most other people, sustained his severest injuries at insignificant obstacles. He had a very bad fall in 1825 on his horse falling at quite a low place. Mr Lambton came down on his head, and remained unconscious for a long time ; it was found that the spine was injured, and symptoms of partial paralysis are said to have set in, but the master being made, as someone remarked, " of those stub heads they make gunbarrels of," he so far recovered as to be able to ride about; but in the very next year an old hack upon which he was mounted came down very heavily with him on the road between Lambton and Morton, an accident which came somewhat inopportunely upon a man who was no more than convalescent. As the result of this second accident Mr Lambton's head and neck became a little out of normal position. Nevertheless, he again carried the horn, but once more had to give up, as The Kitten, his favourite hunter (at that time) gave him a very bad fall in the middle of a field, and for almost six years and a half he was virtually a cripple, and eventually died without regaining his health. The accident happened in 1837. In the days of the Lambton and Raby Hunts local festivities were a good deal thought of, and hunt clubs played a more prominent part in the social side of the hunting world than they do at the present day. The Lambton Hounds had not been long in existence before the Tally-Ho Club came into being, its members dining together occasionally at Chester-le-street. The club, however, achieved one good end—its members contrived to obtain some capital portraits of Mr Lambton. They first induced him to sit to Ward in 1821, and the result was a capital portrait of him mounted on Undertaker, Mr Lambton being represented in the act of getting his hounds together in covert. Then the Tally-Ho men subscribed again ; they paid for, and presented, the first picture, and Ferneley, the well-known Leicestershire artist, was responsible for a second portrait of the master on horseback, with some of the favourite hounds about him, and then Mr R. S. Surtees, of Hamsterley, suggested that what the club really desired was a portrait '' of the man and the man alone." Their wish was gratified, and Sir (then Mr) Francis Grant was the painter to whom the commission was intrusted. The local press announced early in the year 1836 that the portrait was approaching completion, and congratulated that " rising artist, Mr Frank Grant," on his work. In due course the picture arrived by sea, and on April 11, 1836, it was presented at the Lambton Arms, Chester-le-street, on which occasion Mr Edward Johnson took the chair at a full gathering of the members of the club. The Sedgefield Club was an institution of rather later date, and its hon. sec. was Mr Benjamin Orde, whose services appear to have first been in request soon after 1804, when Lord Darlington ceded the Sedgefield country to Mr Lambton. Mr Harvey's notes say that the Sedgefield Club was more sociable and of greater use than the Tally-Ho. The Hardwick Arms Inn served for a clubhouse, and Mr Lambton took possession of a little white cottage close by as his head, quarters, while he built for himself small kennels and a sufficiency of stabling near the inn yard. Mr Harvey regretted that it was not possible to ascertain much about the comrades of Mr Lambton during the early portion of his career, but makes mention of a document containing the rules of the Sedgefield Club and a list of the original members ; but this paper I am unable to find. There is, however, one gentleman, Mr Baker, of Elemore (to whom reference has already been made as carrying on the hounds between the death of Mr W. H. Lambton and the accession to office of his younger brother Ralph), whose name stood next to that of the master of whom some particulars are given. Mr Baker was a good, all-round sportsman. In Mr Harvey's words, " He was fading into the 'sere and yellow leaf' when I commenced hunting with the Lambton, but there were the remains of an athletic frame ; he was about the middle height, with muscular power combined with great activity for his years." He was not unknown on the racecourses of the north of England, and his famous mare Jenny Horner—he rode her in a race on Durham course when he was nearly seventy years old—carried off many prizes. On one occasion he took this mare to Musselburgh to run for a hunters' stakes, gentlemen riders. The races were held, Mr Harvey thought, on the sands. A local horse was the favourite with the Scotchmen, but the good thing was upset by Mr Baker and Jenny Horner, who won with great ease, the local sportsmen anathematising his luck and the " bow-backit baker," this epithet being applied to him on account of a stoop in the shoulders, and because the natives of Musselburgh thought that he was a baker by trade. Mr Baker had hunted all his long life with foxhounds, and towards his later years kept a pack of harriers, with which to amuse himself when the foxhounds were paying their visits to Sedgefield, and he was not inclined to make one of the party. There was a story that he once found a fox at Elemore while drawing for a hare, and he let his little pack stick to the line of the fox, pulling him down in Lord Darlington's park at Raby. It was said that he naturally had great misgivings about thus encroaching on the sporting rights of the Lambton Hounds, but the scent was so good that he could not bring himself to stop his pack, trusting to eventually being able to make things right with Mr Lambton. He was told that his "little dogs" must have changed foxes in the course of so long a run, but Mr Baker always denied it, for he said " it was a bob-tailed fox we found and a bob-tailed fox we killed." The pleasant gatherings of the Sedgefield Club were in great favour with all the countryside, while visitors came from Scotland and from many of the distant English hunts to testify to the popularity of Mr Ralph Lambton. The club held two meetings a year, one beginning on the first Monday in November and lasting six weeks, the second in February for a month. Every stable in the village was taken, country houses held large parties invited in honour of the occasion, and the roughest accommodation the village could afford was snapped up. Think of the amount of money brought into the district by these meetings! “In the present day," runs Mr Harvey's manuscript, "club life signifies all that is luxurious; but it would be absurd to suppose that anything deserving of that term applied to the style of the Sedgefield Club. Everything was good and substantial, but the real inducement to be present was the hunting with such a pack of hounds presided over by such a master, whose renown had spread far and wide, and who gave his whole time and unrivalled experience to showing sport and giving evidence of the state of perfection to which his hounds had been brought. When Mr Ralph Lambton's nephew attained his majority and relieved his uncle from further parliamentary duties the latter rejoiced exceedingly, as it was no longer necessary for him to sever himself from his hounds when the House was sitting, though this was of course rather early in his career. From his last fall from The Kitten Mr Lambton never recovered, and on July 29, 1844, he died, most deeply regretted by all who knew him, and leaving a blank which was hard to fill, for as a landlord, friend, member of society, or sportsman, it was not easy to find his equal. The spring of 1838 was the limit of Mr Ralph Lambton's career as master of hounds, and at the close of the season 1837-8 he determined to sell his hounds, and herein there arose a little difficulty. Sir Matthew White Ridley (who in 1818 established a pack of hounds to hunt a portion of Northumberland, which he subsequently abandoned) desired to purchase this well-known kennel in order that he might resume his old Northumberland country. John Winter, the huntsman, had been provided for by Mr Lambton, and so was no longer in want of a berth but Sir Matthew engaged the whippers-in, Robert Hunnam, Tom Harrison, and Robert Robinson, but he could not obtain the hounds. Mr W. H. Lambton had started for London with power to sell, so on Sir Matthew White Ridley making an offer nothing more than a provisional arrangement could be arrived at, for telegrams were not then invented. Mr W. H. Lambton succeeded in finding a buyer in the person of Lord Suffield, who had just then taken the Quorn, and the price he paid was 3000 guineas. So to Leicestershire they went, and, curiously enough, they did not give satisfaction. Lord Suffield, in consequence of disastrous racing speculations, could not keep the hounds for more than a single season, so in the next year the Blagdon baronet was able to buy the Lambton Hounds for about one-third of the price Lord Suffield had paid for them. Sir Matthew, however, did the next best thing at first; he bought the Rufford Hounds from Capt. Percy Williams, who was then giving up the country, adding the Lambton a year later. The Lambton country was now without a pack of foxhounds, but the love of sport, strengthened beyond all doubt by the example set them during the past five-and-thirty years, made the gentlemen of Durham cast about for a means of again setting hunting upon its legs. Accordingly, in the month of May, a meeting was held to discuss measures for obtaining funds to continue hunting, and to get together , “such a pack as would not disgrace their predecessors'' Eventually Mr Williamson, familiarly known as " Billy " Williamson, a fine judge of hounds and hunting, was prevailed upon to hunt the undivided country as Mr Lambton had done, but in the circumstances then obtaining the task proved too great for him, and, after keeping the hounds for a short time, he sold his pack and gave up the country. For the next few years it is somewhat difficult to trace the precise lines upon which the county of Durham was hunted, because it is apparently so bound up with parts of Northumberland; but I fancy that the Wynyard and Durham pack, under Lord Londonderry, next filled the gap, but his lordship seems to have resigned in 1843, when he and Lord Seaham were entertained at dinner, at which gathering Mr Marshall Fowler presided. Meantime Mr Russell, of Brancepeth, and Mr Robertson, of the Northumberland and Durham Hunt, had both resigned their respective countries, and in 1844 the Durham County Hounds were established under a triumvirate, consisting of Lord Seaham, Mr Russell, and Colonel Tower, who were to arrange details. On the new hunt being established Colonel Tower was appointed its first master, and he ruled until 1852, when Mr Williamson was induced to return to office, he remaining at the head of the pack until 1856, when he gave way to Colonel Johnson, who ruled the fortunes of the country until relieved by a committee in 1860, and they again came into harness in 1862, after Mr Henderson had been master for a single season. Up to this time the Duke of Cleveland had subscribed 500 guineas a year to the hunt funds, but this substantial contribution was discontinued in 1865, and so Messrs Harvey and Henderson, who became joint masters in 1863, had to work on somewhat more economical lines than before. In 1871 rabies visited the kennel, and the pack had to be destroyed, and in 1872 a resolution was arrived at that the large tract of country should be divided, whereupon Mr Maynard came forward to look after the northern pack, and Mr Harvey was unanimously elected master of the southern division. He stayed on until 1877, when Sir William Eden succeeded him. Mr Orde supplanted Sir William in 1881, but the latter returned to office in 1885 and hunted the country for five years, when he made way for the Hon. Gr. W. Hamilton Russell. Mr Maynard gave up the north country in 1884, when a committee carried on the hunt until 1889, when Mr Rogerson became master. Want of space precludes my entering into details of runs, &c, for many of them have been published in the Field. Moreover, Mr Harvey's papers do not say very much about matters which occurred during his own rule, except those which refer to the details of each day's hunting. His reminiscences of olden time refer rather to Northumberland hunting, and will be related on another occasion. ARUNDEL.
